Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “küçümencik sindirilebilirler”) tanılamamlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bağlamlanmasıyla oluşan kısaca polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit sözıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit ast birimi barındırır). Temel nüans peptitlerin kısaca, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, başka amino asite sabah akşam, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bağlamlanır. Polipeptid binasına hoşgörüsüzlan amino asitlerin her biri binaya peptid bağlamlarıyla bağlamlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilinen en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine hoşgörüsüzlan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, hür amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin başka ucundaki hür α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
